Fragrance family
Amber fragrances
Warm, resinous, heavy. Labdanum, benzoin, vanilla and spice. This family was called oriental for decades and is now called amber.

How to spot them
The impression is dense and sweet, with a balsamic core. Amber lies like a blanket, not like a breath.
The notes
- Labdanum – resinous, leathery
- Benzoin – sweet, balsamic
- Vanilla – soft, broad
- Cinnamon and clove – sharp, warming
Why the name changed
Oriental describes no note; it ascribes an origin.
The trade has moved to amber instead. The structure meant is the same.
How to tell it from its neighbours
Amber borders wood, blossom and leather. The question is what stands next to the resin.
Woody amber
Wood carries, amber warms. Lighter and drier than plain amber.
Floral amber
Blossom over the resin. Sweeter and brighter, often read as feminine.
Soft amber
Powder instead of spice. The quieter version of the same warmth.
When amber works
Amber wears best in cold. Heat makes it overwhelming fast.
There is no evidence for this: neither retail nor manufacturers state occasion or season. Anyone sorting by them is guessing. That is why neither enters our scoring.
What the concentration changes
Eau de toilette, eau de parfum and extrait differ in the share of fragrance oil, rising in that order. More oil usually means longer wear.
Fixed percentage limits are not laid down in law, and the houses disagree. So ask about the concentration, not about the price.
Where the limit is
Resin notes often stay on clothing longer than on skin. What you smell the next day is the jumper.
That is why every recommendation ends the same way here: the test on your skin decides.
Your next step
The test tells you whether amber comes out in front for your answers – and which three fragrances qualify, with the reasoning sentence by sentence.
