Fragrance family

Citrus fragrances

Bright, sparkling, short. Bergamot, lemon, grapefruit, neroli. The family that pleases fastest and leaves fastest.

Find out whether citrus suits you

18 questions, about five minutes. The result costs 9.99 euros, and you pay only afterwards.

How to spot them

The impression is sour-fresh and slightly bitter. After twenty minutes it steps back and what lies under the peel comes through.

The notes

  • Bergamot – bitter, floral, the most common top note of all
  • Lemon – sharp, clear
  • Grapefruit – bitter, sulphurous in the best sense
  • Neroli – bitter orange blossom, softer

Why so short

Citrus oils are made of very small molecules. They evaporate faster than any other group.

If you want duration, look for an eau de parfum with citrus on top and wood in the base.

How to tell it from its neighbours

Citrus opens a great many fragrances. It is a family of its own only when the peel leads all the way through.

Fruity

Flesh instead of peel. Sweeter, rounder, lasting clearly longer.

Aromatic

Herbs under the peel. The classic eau de cologne sits exactly on that line.

Water and marine

Salt instead of acid. Both read fresh, but citrus is sweeter and sharper.

When citrus works

Citrus works best in heat and fades there fastest. That is not a contradiction but the same cause.

There is no evidence for this: neither retail nor manufacturers state occasion or season. Anyone sorting by them is guessing. That is why neither enters our scoring.

What the concentration changes

Eau de toilette, eau de parfum and extrait differ in the share of fragrance oil, rising in that order. More oil usually means longer wear.

Fixed percentage limits are not laid down in law, and the houses disagree. So ask about the concentration, not about the price.

Where the limit is

Citrus oils can make skin sensitive to light. Modern versions are cleaned up, older ones not always.

That is why every recommendation ends the same way here: the test on your skin decides.

Your next step

The test tells you whether citrus comes out in front for your answers – and which three fragrances qualify, with the reasoning sentence by sentence.
