Fragrance family
Dry woods and leather
Smoky, hard, uncompromising. Birch tar, tobacco, incense, burnt wood. The family that pleases least often and stays longest.

How to spot them
The impression is dry to dusty, often with a pull towards the burnt. No sweetness, no freshness, no blossom.
The notes
- Birch tar – the classic source of leather
- Tobacco – dry, honeyed
- Incense – cold, churchlike
- Vetiver – earthy, smoky
Why it divides
Smoke notes sit close to smells we have learned to read as danger.
Those who like them like them a lot. A middle position barely exists here.
How to tell it from its neighbours
Leather borders wood, moss and amber. The dividing line is smoke.
Plain wood
Dry, but without smoke. Clearly quieter and easier to wear.
Woody amber
Sweetness instead of smoke. The same weight, a different character.
Mossy woods
Damp instead of burnt. Both bitter, but moss stays green.
When leather works
Leather works best in cold. In heat the smoke quickly turns acrid.
There is no evidence for this: neither retail nor manufacturers state occasion or season. Anyone sorting by them is guessing. That is why neither enters our scoring.
What the concentration changes
Eau de toilette, eau de parfum and extrait differ in the share of fragrance oil, rising in that order. More oil usually means longer wear.
Fixed percentage limits are not laid down in law, and the houses disagree. So ask about the concentration, not about the price.
Where the limit is
Birch tar behaves differently on dry skin than on oily skin. That is the biggest variation inside this family.
That is why every recommendation ends the same way here: the test on your skin decides.
Your next step
The test tells you whether leather comes out in front for your answers – and which three fragrances qualify, with the reasoning sentence by sentence.
