How to spot them
The impression is watery-bitter and very direct. No sweetness, no warmth, often a metallic pull in the first minutes.
The notes
- Galbanum – bitter, resinous, piercing
- Fig leaf – milky green
- Violet leaf – cool, metallic
- Grass – freshly cut, short-lived
Why they seem short
Almost all green notes sit in the top, not in the base.
What remains after two hours is usually the wood or moss beneath, no longer the green.
How to tell it from its neighbours
Green is the coolest of the four woody-side families. The line runs at what is left once the top has gone.
Aromatic
Herb instead of leaf. The same coolness, but more resin and more staying power.
Citrus
Peel instead of leaf. Brighter and sweeter, less bitter.
Mossy woods
Often the same top note, but a damp, earthy underlay. Green without a floor, moss with one.
When green works
Green reads strongest in warmth, because that is when the coolness stands out. In cold it fades fast.
There is no evidence for this: neither retail nor manufacturers state occasion or season. Anyone sorting by them is guessing. That is why neither enters our scoring.
What the concentration changes
Eau de toilette, eau de parfum and extrait differ in the share of fragrance oil, rising in that order. More oil usually means longer wear.
Fixed percentage limits are not laid down in law, and the houses disagree. So ask about the concentration, not about the price.
