Mossy woody fragrances

Bitter, cool, grown-up. Oakmoss over patchouli, with a bitter citrus note on top. That structure is called chypre and is the oldest build still alive in perfumery.

Find out whether moss suits you

18 questions, about five minutes. The result costs 9.99 euros, and you pay only afterwards.

How to spot them

The first impression is bitter rather than sweet, the last damp rather than dry. In between sits something earthy that recalls forest floor in autumn.

The build

  • Top – bergamot, bitter and fresh
  • Heart – labdanum or blossom
  • Base – oakmoss and patchouli

Take one of the three away and it is no longer a chypre.

Why today differs

Oakmoss has been restricted in quantity since 2003 because it causes allergies.

Modern chypres rebuild the effect. They smell smoother than the models from the seventies.

How to tell it from its neighbours

Moss sits between plain wood and leather. The difference lies in what hides under the citrus note.

Plain wood

Dry and quiet, with no bitter top. Wood begins where the chypre loses its tension.

Dry woods and leather

Smoke in the base instead of moss. Harder, less green, clearly heavier.

Aromatic

Herbs instead of moss. The same coolness, but fresher and without the damp underlay.

When moss works

Moss wears better in cool air. In heat the bitter side comes forward and reads as sharp.

There is no evidence for this: neither retail nor manufacturers state occasion or season. Anyone sorting by them is guessing. That is why neither enters our scoring.

What the concentration changes

Eau de toilette, eau de parfum and extrait differ in the share of fragrance oil, rising in that order. More oil usually means longer wear.

Fixed percentage limits are not laid down in law, and the houses disagree. So ask about the concentration, not about the price.

Where the limit is

Oakmoss has the widest range on skin of any note. On you it can read velvety, on someone else dusty.

That is why every recommendation ends the same way here: the test on your skin decides.

Your next step

The test tells you whether moss comes out in front for your answers – and which three fragrances qualify, with the reasoning sentence by sentence.
