How to spot them
The impression recalls rice powder or fresh laundry. The blossom is there, but as if behind a cloth.
The notes
- Iris – earthy powder, the most expensive floral note
- Violet – cool, faintly metallic
- Aldehydes – soapy, sparkling
- Heliotrope – almondy, soft
Where the powder comes from
Aldehydes were first used to defining effect in 1921 and still set the impression today.
What many call classic is usually this material.
How to tell it from its neighbours
The family is the muted version of the floral. The line runs at volume.
Floral
Blossom without a veil. More direct and usually louder.
Soft amber
Powder without blossom. Warmer and sweeter.
Green
Cool like violet leaf, but bitter rather than powdery.
When powdery blossom works
Powdery blossom takes warmth well because it stays quiet. In cold it can read too faint.
There is no evidence for this: neither retail nor manufacturers state occasion or season. Anyone sorting by them is guessing. That is why neither enters our scoring.
What the concentration changes
Eau de toilette, eau de parfum and extrait differ in the share of fragrance oil, rising in that order. More oil usually means longer wear.
Fixed percentage limits are not laid down in law, and the houses disagree. So ask about the concentration, not about the price.
Where the limit is
Iris is the note that reacts most strongly to skin tone. Earthy on you, cold on someone else.
That is why every recommendation ends the same way here: the test on your skin decides.
